JANUARY

 

1:     1863 - At Murfreesboro, TN, both armies rest. Battle of Galveston, TX. Confederates recapture important port city.  Lincoln signs Emancipation Proclamation.

2:     1863 - Battle of Murfreesboro, horrific fighting, over 24,000 CS & US killed, wounded, or missing in action.

3:     1863 - Despite his victory, Gen. Bragg withdraws the CS Army of TN from Murfreesboro.

4:     1863 - Off Charleston, CS blockade-runner carrying important dispatches is captured by the USS Quaker City.

5:     1863 – After main battle, minor fighting in several places near Murfreesboro, TN as Federal troops enter the city.

6:     1863 – NY City Mayor Fernando Wood proposes that if the Union is dissolved, NY should become a free city, trading with both North and South.

7:     1861 - At St. Augustine, FL, State Troops take control of Ft. Marion.

8:     1821 - Gen. James Longstreet born.  1863 - CS Gen. Joseph Wheeler begins week-long raid at Mill Creek, Harpeth Shoals, and Ashland, TN.

9:     1861 - Mississippi 2nd State to secede.

10:   1861 - Florida  3rd State to secede.

11:   1861 - Alabama 4th State to secede.  1863 - Naval battle between the CSS Alabama and the USS Hatteras off Galveston, TX.

12:   1864 - Across the Rio Grande River from Brownsville, TX, Federal troops enter Matamoros, Mexico to remove the U.S. Consul because of heavy fighting between warring Mexican factions.

13:   1863 - Federals capture the towns of St. Charles, Clarendon, DuVall's Bluff and Des Arc, Arkansas.  1865 -  US Adm. Porter attacks Ft. Fisher.

14:   1864 - Skirmish at Shoal Creek, AL.

15:   1865 - After heavy fighting, Federal forces assault and capture Fort Fisher, N.C.

16:   1865 - Off Aransas Pass, Texas, the CS schooner Mary Agnes, loaded with cotton bales, is destroyed by the USS Penobscot.

17:   1862 - On the Tennessee River, Federal gunboats demonstrate against the Confederates holding Fort Henry.

18:   1862 - The Confederate Territory of Arizona is formed.  1864 - In western North Carolina, opponents of the Confederate conscription law hold meetings. 

        1862 - Battle at Mill Springs.

19:   1807 – Gen. Robert E. Lee born.  1861 - Georgia is fifth state to secede from the Union.  1862 - Battle of Mill Springs

20:   1861 - Mississippi secessionists take  Federal installations on Ship Island.

21:   1824 – Lt. Gen. Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson born.

22:   1862 - Federal blockading ships attack Aransas Pass, Texas.  1864 - Skirmish at Clear Creek Arkansas.

23:   1864 - Skirmish at Cowskin Bottom, Indian Territory.

24:   1861 - Georgia state troops take control of the Federal arsenal in August.

25:   1856 - The CS cruiser "Shenandoah" arrives at Melbourne, Australia.

26:   1861 - Louisiana is 6th State to secede from the Union.  1863 – Hooker takes command of US forces.

27:   1863 - Philadelphia Journal  editor arrested & charged with publishing anti-Union material.

28:   1825 - Gen. George Pickett born.  1865 - President Jefferson Davis names 3 com-missioners to hold peace talks with US.

29:   1863 - Federal ships bombard the Confederates at Galveston, Texas.  1864 - Confederates attack Federal steamer "Sir William Wallace" on the Mississippi.

30:   1861 - At Mobile, U.S. Revenue Cutter "Lewis Cass" surrenders to Alabama officers.  1865 - Skirmishes at Lake Verret and Richland Plantation, Louisiana.

31:   1865 - Robert E. Lee named Commander-in-Chief of all CS Armies.

 

FEBRUARY

 

1:     1861 - Austin  TX secession convention votes 166 to 7 in favor of secession.  1865 - Sherman begins Carolina Campaign.

2:     1803 - Gen. Albert S. Johnston born.  1862 - Minor skirmish in Morgan County, TN  1863 - Union ram "Queen of the West" runs past the CS batteries at Vicksburg.

3:     1807 - Gen. Joseph E. Johnston born.  1863 - Below Vicksburg, "Queen of the West" captures 3 Confederate vessels.  1864 - Meridian Campaign begins. 

        1865 - Skirmish at Hog Jaw Valley, Alabama.  1865 - Peace talks begin.

4:     1861 - At Montgomery, AL the Confederate States of America is organized at the 1st session of the Provisional Confederate Congress.

5:     1861 - At the Secession Convention at Montgomery, a resolution is offered calling for the formation of "a Confederacy of the States which have seceded from the United States."

6:     1833 - Gen. J.E.B. Stuart born.  1862 - On the Tennessee River, Ft Henry is surrendered to Federals.  1863 - The Federal government refuses a French offer of mediation between North and South.

7:     1865 - Federal cutters enter Galveston Harbor TX & capture schooners Pet and Annie Sophie, & their cargo totaling 476 bales of cotton.

8:     1861 - Provisional CS Constitution unanimously adopted at Montgomery, AL.  1862 - Battle of Roanoke Island.

9:     1861 - Jefferson Davis and Alexander Stephens elected President and Vice- President of the CSA.

10:   1864 - Fighting at Barber's Ford, Camp Cooper, and Lake City, FL.

11:   1812 - Alexander H. Stephens born at Crawfordville, GA.  Stephens was V.P. of the CSA, a US Congressman and Gov. of Georgia.  Died in Atlanta in 1883.

12:   1861 - At Montgomery, Provisional Congress of the Confederacy provides for  Peace Commission to the US.

13:   1862 - Beginning of the Federal attack on Ft. Donelson, on the Cumberland River.

14:   1862 - At Ft. Donelson, Union  ironclads begin fierce exchange of fire with Confederate shore batteries.

15:   1862 - Battle of Ft Donelson.  Despite day-long fighting in which Federals are nearly defeated, inept Confederate Generals Floyd and Pillow decide to surrender the next day.

16:   "Committee of Public Safety," pro-CS forces, seize US Army Military Post &  Federal Arsenal San Antonio, TX

17:   1864 - Off Charleston, SC, CS submarine H.L. Hunley becomes 1st submarine in history to sink an enemy ship in combat.  1865 - Columbia, S.C. surrenders.

18:   1861 - At Montgomery, AL, Jefferson Davis is inaugurated Provisional President of the Confederate States of America.

19:   1861 - Louisiana State Troops seize US paymaster's office in New Orleans.  1865 - Sherman’s men destroy most Columbia, SC, burning all railroad property.

20:   Confederate House of Representatives authorizes the use of slaves as soldiers.  Gen. Robert E. Lee endorsed the idea.

21:   1864 - Fighting at Ellis' Bridge, Prairie Station, West Point, and Union, MS.

22:   1862 - On Texas Gulf coast, the US Navy heavily shells the town of Port Aransas.

23:   1861 - Confederates begin to evacuate Nashville, TN as Federals approach.  1865 - Gen. Joseph E. Johnston assumes command of the Army of Tennessee.

24:   1864 - Along the Texas Gulf coast around Matagorda Bay, the Federal Army issues a conditional amnesty for local residents.

25:   1862 - Nashville, TN occupied by Union troops & remains so throughout the war.

26:   1863 - Below Vicksburg, Confederates blow up newly captured gunboat Indianola mistakenly believing they are under attack by a Federal ironclad.

27:   1863 - President Jefferson Davis names 3 Confederate commissioners to Washington attempting negotiations with Federals.  1863 - President Davis calls for a day of fasting and prayer.

28:   1863 - Near Ft McAllister, GA, CSS Nashville destroyed by USS Montauk.

 

MARCH

 

1:     1862 - President Jefferson Davis proclaims martial law in Richmond, & pro-northern sympathizers are arrested.

2:     1861 - Texas admitted to the Confederacy.  Federal Revenue Cutter Henry Dodge seized by Texas State Troops at Galveston.  1865 - Battle of Waynesboro, VA.

3:     1863 - Enrollment Act passed.  1865 - TX Gulf coast, USS Quaker City captures CSS schooner Telmico loaded with 24 bales of cotton & 64 sacks of pecans.

        1865 - Congress creates Freedmen's Bureau.

4:     1861 - Abraham Lincoln inaugurated 16th president, & newspaper editorials in the South proclaim this means war.  1862 - Confederate troops enter Santa Fe, NM.

        1865 - Pres. Lincoln's 2nd inaugural.

5:     1862 - Near Fayetteville, AR, Gen. Earl Van Dorn's forces join Gen. Sterling Price’s to stop Fed. Gen. Samuel Curtis.

6:     1862 - Battle of Elkhorn Tavern (Pea Ridge), AR.  1st day of fighting moderate.  Gen. Van Dorn's forces flank Feds in a night march.

7:     1862 - Battle of Elkhorn Tavern continues (Pea Ridge),  CSA Generals McCulloch & McIntosh killed in action. 

8:     1862 - Battle of Elkhorn Tavern, AR. 3rd & final day of fighting results in the Feds driving Confederates from Pea Ridge.

9:     1862 - Battle of the Monitor & the CSS Virginia.  In Hampton Roads, VA, 2 "modern" ironclad vessels battle to a draw.

10:   1865 - Conclusion of 3 days of heavy engagements at Kinston, NC  1865 - Skirmish near Boyd's Station, AL.

11:   1861 - Confederate Congress unanimously adopts Constitution of the Confederate States of America.

12:   1862 - Federal forces temporarily occupy Jacksonville, FL.  1864 - Red River campaign begins.  US Grant promoted to command US forces. 

        1865 - Skirmishing near Columbia and Macon, MO.

13:   1865 - President Jefferson Davis signs legislation allowing Negroes in the CS Army.  Gen. Lee acts promptly & black troops are in CS uniforms in Richmond.

14:   1863 - Fed gunboats bombard Confederate positions at Port Hudson, LA

15:   1863 - British ship Britannia runs Federal blockade into Wilmington, NC.

16:   1861 - Jefferson Davis arrives in Montgomery, AL to accept the post of Provisional President of the newly organized CSA.  1861 - Arizona secedes.

17:   1828 - Gen. Patrick Cleburne born.  1864 - CS forces attack Fed occupied Corpus Christi, TX.  1865 - Campaign to capture Mobile begins.

18:   1861 - In TX, Governor Sam Houston refuses to take oath of allegiance to the Confederacy.  1862 - President Jefferson Davis appoints Judah P. Benjamin as Confederate Secretary of State.

19:   1864 - Battle of Bentonville, NC.  Harsh fighting between Sherman's army and CS forces.

20:   1865 - Battle of Bentonville.  2d day no heavy fighting, considerable skirmishing.

21:   1865 - Battle of Bentonville concludes.  Last significant effort to halt Sherman.

22:   1817 - Braxton Bragg born.  1864 - After heavy snowfall in Richmond, VA, CS soldiers engage in a huge snowball fight.

23:   1862 – 1st Battle of Kernstown, VA

24:   1864 - CS calvary under Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest captures Union City, TN.

25:   1865 - In FL, fighting at Bluff Springs, Cotton Creek, and Escambia River.  1865 - CS attacks Ft Stedman, Petersburg, VA.

26:   1862 - NM Campaign.  Confeds & Feds clash near Santa Fe at Apache Canyon.

27:   1864 - Camden Expedition. Fighting at Branchville & Brooks' Mill, AR

28:   1818 - Gen. Wade Hampton born.  1862 - NM Campaign.  Battle of Glorieta Pass.  The major battle of the war in the far west occurs not far from Santa Fe. 

        1862 - Taylor marches to reinforce Jackson.

29:   1865 - Appomattox campaign begins.  Near Petersburg, Virginia, there is heavy fighting near the junction of the Boydton and Quaker roads.

30:   1862 - Federals attack Union City, Tennessee.

        1863 – Skirmish, Tahlequah, Indian Territory.

31:   1863 - Skirmish, Clapper's Saw Mill.

 

 

APRIL

1:     1865 – Appomattox Campaign.  Battle of Five Forks, southwest of Petersburg.

2:     1865 – The Petersburg-Richmond front begins to collapse.  The Confederate government flees Richmond.  CS Gen. A.P. Hill is killed near Petersburg.

3:     1865 – Fall of Richmond & Petersburg as Federal troops occupy cities.

4:     1862 - Gen. Albert S. Johnston’s army marches from Corinth, Miss. toward Pittsburg landing, TN.

5:     1862 – Gen. Albert S. Johnston’s Confederate Army moves toward Shiloh Church near Pittsburg Landing, TN.

6:     1862 – Battle of Shiloh, TN.  2nd largest of the war.  Furious Confederate assault drives back Federal Army.

7:     1862 – Battle of Shiloh.  Fed Army retakes & holds field on 2nd day of fighting.  Fall of Island # 10 on Mississippi River.

8:     1864 – Red River Campaign.  Battle of Mansfield, Louisiana. 1865 – Appomattox Campaign.  Lee is cut off near Appomattox Court House.

9:     1865 – Lee surrenders over 26,000 veterans of his Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox Court House.

10:    1806 – CS Gen. Leonidas Polk born. 1865 – At Appomattox, Gen. Lee issues his last general orders as a soldier, bidding “an affectionate farewell” to his troops.

11:    1861 – At Charleston, Confederates demand the surrender of Fort Sumter.  1862 – Near Savannah, Feds surrender Ft Pulaski after being heavily shelled & hit over 5,000 times.

12:    1861 – Confederates fire on Ft. Sumter, S.C. @ 4:30 a.m.

13:    1861 – Federal garrison @ Ft. Sumter, S.C. surrenders to Confederates after 34 hours of bombardment.

14:    1865 – President Lincoln shot by actor, John Wilkes Booth, at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C.

15:    1863 – CSS Alabama captures 2 U.S. whalers off coast of Brazil. 1864 – US ironclad Eastport is severely damaged by Confederate torpedo on Red River.

16:    1863 – Under heavy fire from Confederate artillery, Porter’s Federal fleet finally passes Vicksburg. 1864 – Red River Campaign.  Skirmishing at Grand Ecore, Louisiana

17:    1861 – In Richmond, the Virginia State Convention adopts an ordinance of secession by a vote of 88 to 55.

18:    1864 – At Poison Springs, Arkansas, Confederates under Gen. John S. Marmaduke attack a Federal supply column capturing 198 wagons.

19:    1861 – President Lincoln declares a blockade against the ports of the states of S.C., Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas.

        1862 – Battle of South Mills

20:    1865 – In Georgia, there is fighting at Rocky Creek near Macon, Spring Hill, & at Mimms Mills on Tobesofke Creek.

21:    1861 – Col. Earl Van Dorn accepts command of Confederate forces in Texas.  His volunteers capture three Federal ships, the Mobile, Fashion, & United States.

22:    1861 – Franklin Buchanan, commandant of the Washington Navy Yard, resigns from the U.S. Navy to join the Confederacy.

23:    1862 – Confederate raiders capture several Federal vessels in Aransas Bay, Texas.

        1863 – Skirmish at Independence, Missouri

24:    1862 – Below New Orleans, the Federal fleet, under heavy fire, passes Fts Jackson & St. Philip, & moves up the Mississippi to engage Confederate gunboats.

25:    1861 – At Saluria, Texas, seven companies from the 1st, 3rd, & 8th U.S. Infantry Regiments surrender to col. Earl Van Dorn.

26:    1865 – gen. Joseph E. Johnston surrenders the Army of Tennessee near Durham Station, N.C.

27:    1861 – The Federal blockade is extended to the Virginia & N.C. coasts. 1861 – The Virginia Convention invites the Confederate government to make Richmond the seat of government.

28:    1862 – Confederates surrender Fts Jackson & St. Philip to Federals, & the Mississippi River is under Federal control from the Gulf of Mexico to New Orleans.

29:    1861 – Maryland votes against secession by 53 to 13 vote. 1862 – New Orleans surrenders to Union.

30:    1864 – At Richmond, Joe Davis, son of President Jefferson Davis, is killed in an accidental fall off the veranda of the Confederate White House.

 

MAY

1:     1863 – Battle of Chancellorsville, VA. 1st of 4 days fighting @ Fredericksburg, Salem Heights, & Marye’s Heights.

2:     1863 – Battle of Chancellorsville, Gen. Stonewall Jackson’s flank march is successful.  Later, he is accidentally wounded by his own men.

3:     1863 – Battle of Chancellorsville.  Failure of Federal frontal assaults at Fredericksburg.

4:                 Battle of Chancellorsville, & Salem Church, VA.

5:     1862 – Battle of Williamsburg, VA. 1864 – Battle of the Wilderness, VA begins.

6:     1861 – Arkansas &  Tennessee vote to secede. Davis approves state of war between US & CS.

           1864 – Battle of Wilderness continues.

7:     1862 – Battle of Eltham’s Landing, VA. 1864 – In northern Georgia, Gen. Sherman’s 3 different armies of 100,000 men begin their march on Atlanta.

8:     1862 – Valley Campaign, Battle of McDowell, Virginia is victory for Stonewall Jackson. 1864 – Fighting begins @ Spotsylvania Court House, VA

9:     1864 – Atlanta Campaign.  Near Resaca, Georgia @ Snake Creek Gap, the Federal army fails to dislodge entrenched Confederates by deciding to withdraw rather than fight.

10:    1863 – Lt. Gen. “Stonewall” Jackson dies. 1864 – Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, VA.

11:    1864 – Battle of Yellow Tavern, VA.  Gen. J.E.B. “Jeb” Stuart is mortally wounded in this cavalry battle about 6 miles north of Richmond. 

12:    1864 - CS Gen. Jeb Stuart dies.  1864 – Battle of “Bloody Angle” at Spotsylvania Court House. 1865 – Last battle of war fought at Palmito Ranch, near Brownsville, TX.

13:    1863 – Gov. Zebulon B. Vance of N.C. expresses concern over desertion in the Confederate Army.

14:    1864 – Atlanta Campaign.  Battle of Resaco, GA.

15:    1864 – Battle of New Market, VA. Atlanta Campaign.  Battle of Resaco.  Armies meet head-on & Confederates are driven back.  Hood withdraws his army during night

16:    1863 – At Montgomery, Confederate Congress officially admits Tennessee to the Confederacy.  1863 – Battle of Champion’s Hill.  Siege of Vicksburg begins.

         1864 – Battle of Drewry’s Bluff, VA.

17:    1863 – Battle of Bib Glack River Bridge, MS. Confederates under Gen. Pemberton withdraw to Vicksburg defenses.

18:    1863 – Beginning of the Federal siege of Vicksburg.  1864 – Heavy fighting @ Spotsylvania Court House, VA.

19:    1863 – Failure of major Federal frontal assault on Vicksburg defenses.

20:    1861 – North Carolina 11th & last full state to secede from US.  1864 – In GA, Fed troops occupy Cartersville, after skirmishing on Etowah River.

21:    1863 – Federal siege of Port Hudson, Louisiana begins. 1865 – Under the command of Lt. Waddell, the CSS Shenandoah enters the Sea of Okhotsk, looking for Yankee whalers.

22:    1863 – Siege of Vicksburg.  Major Federal assault against the Confederate line fails. 1865 – Former C.S. President Jefferson Davis imprisoned at Ft. Monroe, VA.

23:    1861 – Virginia secedes. 1862 – Battle of Front Royal, VA.

24:    1861 – For the 1st time, North sets foot upon Southern soil as Federal troops enter VA & occupy Alexandria.

25:    1862 – First Battle of Winchester. 1864 – Atlanta Campaign, Battle of New Hope Church, Georgia.  Federals suffer heavy losses & their attack fails.

26:    1865 – In New Orleans, Confederate Gen Simon B. Buckner meets Federal authorities & surrenders the Confederate Army of the Trans-Mississippi, the last significant Southern force still in the field.

27:    1863 – At Port Hudson, Louisiana, the 13,000 man Federal army attacks the 4,500 Confederate defenders in the first actual assault on the post.  After heavy Federal losses, the attack fails.

28:    1818 – CS Gen. Pierre G.T. Beauregard born. 1864 – Atlanta Campaign.  Heavy fighting @ Pickett’s Mills, along Confederate line from New Hope Church to Dallas.

29:    1865 – With a few exceptions, U.S. President Andrew Johnson grants amnesty & pardons to all who participated in “the existing rebellion”.

30:    1862 – Skirmish @ Mill Creek, Missouri. 1863 – Skirmish @ Port Isabel, TX.

31:    1862 – Battle of Fair Oaks, Virginia.  Battle of Seven Pines, Virginia. 1863 – Fighting continues @ Vicksburg, MS & Port Hudson, LA.

 

 

JUNE

1:     1862 – Lee appointed Commander of army in Virginia. 1862 – Battle of Seven Pines, 2nd day.

        1864 – Battle of Cold Harbor, 1st day.

2:     1864 – Battle of Cold Harbor 2nd day.

3:     1808 – Jefferson Davis born. 1864 – Battle of Cold Harbor 3rd day.  Near Richmond, Gen. Lee’s army repels massive charge that cost 7,000 Federal soldiers lives in less than 1 hour.

4:     1862 – Along Yazoo & Mississippi Rivers, Southern planters burn huge cotton stores to prevent capture by Federals.

5:     1863 – Stuart hosts Grand Review of his cavalry. 1864 – On Matagorda Island, TX, 13 black members of Union Corps de Afrique are hanged by Federal military authorities after convictions for mutiny.

6:     1862 – Memphis surrenders.  Brig. Gen. Turner Ashby killed in action near Harrisonburg, VA.

7:     1862 – In New Orleans, Union Gen. Butler has citizen William B. Mumford hanged for tearing down Union flag over New Orleans Mint.

8:     1861 – Tennessee formally secedes.  Federals blockade Key West, Florida. 1862 – Valley Campaign.  Confederate victory @ Battle of Cross Keys, VA.

9:     1862 – Valley Campaign.  Battle of Port Republic. 1863 – Battle of Brandy Station, VA.

10:    1861 – First serious battle of war fought @ Big Bethel, VA. 1864 – At Brice’s Crossroads, Mississippi, Gen. N.B. Forrest leads his cavalry to a brilliant & classic victory.

11:    1864 – Forrest’s men follow & attack beaten Federals as they straggle back toward Memphis.

12:    1862 – On Peninsula in Virginia, Brigadier Gen. “Jeb” Stuart begins famous 4-day reconnaissance known as the “Ride Around McClellan.

13:    1862 – Jeb Stuart’s troopers move around McClellan’s right flank, passing thru Hanover Court House & fighting @ Haw’s Shop, VA.

14:    1861 – Skirmish @ Seneca Mills, Maryland.

        1864 – Atlanta Campaign.  Gen. Leonidas Polk killed @ Pine Mountain, GA.

15:    1863 – Battle of Winchester, VA.  British House of Lords debates seizure of British ships by US vessels.  1864 – Petersburg Campaign begins.

17:    1864 – Atlanta Campaign.  In front of Marietta, GA, along mud Creek, Sherman’s troops launch attack on Confederate line.

18:    1862 – In VA, skirmishing near Richmond on Nine-Mile Road.  Fighting near Winchester.

19:    1864 – Off Cherbourg, France, CSS Alabama sunk by USS Kearsarge.  Siege of Petersburg begins.

20:    1863 – Vicksburg Campaign.  Confederate city comes under intense shelling from Federal batteries.

21:    1862 – 2nd of 3 days fighting @ Des Allemands Bayou, LA. 1863 – Fighting @ Hudsonville, MS, Brashear City, LA, & Powder Springs Gap, TN

22:    1864 – Petersburg Campaign.  Confederates of Gen. A.P. Hill’s corps stop Union attempt to seize Weldon Railroad.

23:    1865 – Ft. Towson, Gen. Stand Watie surrenders his Indian command in last formal surrender of a large Confederate force.

24:    1863 – Gen. Longstreet’s & A.P. Hill’s corps cross Potomac & enter Maryland while enroute to PA.  Fed shelling of Vicksburg continues.

25:    1862 – Peninsular Campaign.  Near Richmond, series of battles called Seven Days’ Battles begins with fighting @ Oak Grove.

26:    1862 – Peninsular Campaign.  Seven Days’ Battles.  Battle of Mechanicsville.  Federals fall back from their advance toward Richmond.

        1864 – Stoneman begins Atlanta raid.

27:    1862 – Peninsular Campaign.  Battle of Gaines’ Mill, VA. 1864 – Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, GA.

23:   1862 – Skirmish near Helena, Arkansas.  1863 – Fighting @ Culpepper Court House, VA, & Corinth, Mississippi.

24:   1863 – Skirmish near Dandridge, TN.  1864 – Feds begin bombardment of Ft. Fisher, NC.

25:   1863 – Fed troops enter Gulf coast town of Port Lavaco, TX.  After taking what they want, Feds burn the business district of the town.

26:   1860 – In Charleston Harbor, SC, State Troops seize castle Pinckney.

27:   1862 – Skirmish @ Dripping Springs, Arkansas.  1863 – Confederate Congress abolishes substitution for military service.

28:   1862 – Vicksburg Campaign.  Battle of Chickasaw Bayou.  1863 – On the Matagorda Peninsula in TX, there is heavy  fighting between TX Cavalrymen & Maine infantrymen.

29:   1863 – While landing on the Texas Matagords Peninsula, 20 Confederates of the Matagorda Bay Marine Force freeze to death when a northerly swamps their boats.  Federals fire on survivors.

30:   1862 – USS Monitor sinks off Cape Hatteras.
        1863 – Skirmish @ St. Augustine, FL. 
        1864 – Skirmish @ Leighton, AL.

31:   1862 – Battle of Murfreesboro, TN.  Confeds & Feds fight each other all day long.
